District Soccer Championships Beckon

It is Term One and the soccer gala season is here once again. Every secondary school around has been readying itself for this time and there is no doubt this promises to be an exciting season. Here at Bishop McAllister College we have enjoyed everything about the preparation. At the boys' end the team coach has been putting the players through their paces and the training sessions have been a joy to watch. For weeks now, we have sat at the pitch mostly in the evenings to see our players practise dribbling, the art of passing, scoring in shootouts and many other skills. We have been able to see the incredible genius of some of our players at a stage many people outside never get the opportunity to see.

The girls team's preparations have been bolstered by the expertise of Kate Ollerhead, a daughter of one of our overseas friends, Profssor Jeff Ollerhead , who came with her on a school visit. Kate loves football and says she has trained and played in big ladies' teams in Canada. She has been with the girls’ team since she arrived and we have her to thank, at least in part, for their success in the zonal competitions where they qualified for district competitions having finished top of their group.

Meanwhile, the boys team also showed mettle in the zonal competitions which normally come as a prelude to district championships. They qualified for the district competitions after triumphing over all the three opposition teams in the group scoring an average of four goals per match and conceding just one. We hope with more training and build up matches, we should be able to defend our district crown successfully when the competitions start in mid March.
