“We are making a difference”

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Bishop McAllister College! 1st term of the new school year is going very well. It is always exciting to see the new faces which have joined Senior One and Senior Five, and of course the young ones in primary five. We are now all settled into our normal routine as we approach the half way mark and students anxiously wait for visiting day (this Saturday) in the hopes that family members will visit them and bring foodstuffs.

For the past few weeks we have been enjoying visitors from the Diocese of Fredericton. Daryll and Rosemarie Kingston with their grandson Colton, and Professor Jeff Ollerhead with his daughter Katherine. They have had a busy time. Rosemarie who chairs the child sponsorship program in Canada has been busy meeting with sponsored students, Darryl has rewired a couple of houses and made many electrical repairs, Jeff has been busy helping with the wiring, teaching seminarians computer lessons and building book shelves, and Katherine has been busy teaching computer lessons also, as well as coaching the girls soccer team. They are now on their way home or preparing for the journey back, and are a bit tired.

This past week we celebrated Women’s Day (a holiday here in Uganda) and tried to make it as special as possible for all the women and girls at the school.  You can read all about it here Women’s Day - 2012 .

Of course as many of you will recall this is soccer season for secondary schools here in Uganda. It has four levels, Zonals, Districts, Regionals, and Nationals. We have done well so far, with both boys and girls team winning in the Zonal Competitions and preparing for the District Competitions on Thursday and Friday of this week.  For more about the Zonal Competitions please check out the story and pictures "District Championships Beckons".

As we look forward to District Soccer Competitions, we continue to busy with Lent and preparing ourselves for Holy Week and Easter. We have about 35 students fasting lunch this lent, and I have been having the pleasure of leading them in bible studies, and a study of “Basic Christianity” by John Stott. It has been very rewarding for me. Of course the much anticipated “Resurrection Race”, the 1st Term edition of the Rectors Challenge kicks of in a few days. I hope my preparation has been enough.

Last but not least in February we received O Level results for 2011. We had 34 students with Division One, and as a result we were ranked 143rd out of 2565 schools across Uganda. I congratulate all the staff and students for their hard work and success.

On behalf of all the students and staff I would like to say thank you for all your prayers and financial support for myself and for this ministry.  By God’s grace, we have done much together to change the lives of so many young Ugandans, and together we have much for which to celebrate and give thanks.  Thank you so much!

May God continue to bless & keep you all!
